Plaka, one of the most famous districts of the city, on the foothills of Acropolis, is an essential stop for every visitor.

There Anafiotika dominates, a district in Cycladic style that took its name from builders, residents of Anafi island, who were looking for a section to build their homes, since the cost in the rest of Athens was expensive. The narrow alleys of the area host buildings of impressive architecture.

Mnisikleous Street or Plaka stairs, “the most beautiful stairs”, is a necessary stop to enjoy your coffee and all-day food to accompany your ouzo or wine.

The tour continues in Monastiraki, the central square, and the flea market, where you can find all sorts of shops with clothes, books, and even foodstuff.

The pedestrian street Dionysiou Areopagitou and Thiseio “embrace” the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis are two of Athens’s most famous streets, offering a nostalgic atmosphere. You can find in the area many places to enjoy your coffee or have lunch under the Acropolis.

The Acropolis Museum is a museum of modern design, ready to take you on a unique cultural journey, with particularly sophisticated exhibitions, a real treasure of cultural heritage. The guided tours inside the museum are of great interest. A visit to the museum’s roof café-restaurant overlooking the unique Parthenon on the Acropolis is a must.

Also within a short distance is Syntagma Square, the central square of Athens. It took its name from the Constitution granted by King Otto of Greece in 1983 and is surrounded by the most important buildings of the capital, such as the Greek Parliament, the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as many ministries.

Head in front of the Parliament building, to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is guarded by the Evzones; there, you will be able to see up close the ritual of changing the guard in front of the monument.

The Evzones, or “Tsoliades”, wear the traditional uniform and are specially trained so that they can stand still without reacting. The Greek Presidential Guard was founded in 1868 as a regular army regiment. Today, the duties of the Evzones are mainly of a ceremonial nature.

You can continue your tour in the surrounding streets of the square, such as Vasilissis Amalias Avenue and Stadiou Avenue, do your shopping in Ermou, the most prominent commercial pedestrian street of Athens where small and large clothing, footwear, and many other stores are hosted and enjoy your food or drink in Karytsi Square, where you will find countless restaurants and small café-bars that “are hidden” in the narrow streets of the area.

A visit that you should not miss is the well-known hill of Athens, that of Lycabettus, which dominates over the city and is visible from almost every point. Lycabettus Hill is a more beautiful part of the city and one of the most characteristic images of the Athenian landscape. It is the ideal spot for short getaways in nature, for exercise, for late nights with endless conversations gazing at the city’s lights, for romantic walks. Especially at sunset, you will be impressed by the imposing view across Athens.

Continue your walk towards Exarcheia and Kolonaki, two of the most picturesque areas of the city, which are the big “dilemma” of the Athenians and with Ippokratous Street being the “natural border” between these two areas. Two areas so alike but at the same time so different! If you are looking for something casual, then Exarcheia is precisely what you need; if you prefer expensive shops and a more “sophisticated” way of life, then all roads lead to Kolonaki, where you may end up drinking your drink your coffee next to some famous personality, of the Greek or international scene!
